macOS 27 Is Killing Elgato Facecams, and the Fix Mostly Isn't Working

By Dan Whitfield··4 min read

If you stream from a Mac and have not installed macOS 27 Golden Gate yet, read this before you do. Elgato has confirmed that Facecam and Facecam Pro stop providing a signal after the update, says it is working directly with Apple, and has published a workaround that — by the counter on its own support page — has helped 2 people out of 12.

Have a stream scheduled and a Facecam? Do not update yet.

macOS 27 shipped on September 14 and this is still open. There is no clean way back — a macOS downgrade means wiping the machine and restoring from a backup taken on the old version. The update takes one click; undoing it takes an afternoon.

What is affected

Elgato Facecammodel 10WAA9901
Elgato Facecam Promodel 10WAB9901

Those are the two models Elgato names. We found no evidence that macOS 27 is breaking other vendors' webcams or capture cards — but treat that as "not reported" rather than "confirmed safe". Major macOS releases have a long history of upsetting USB video devices, and manufacturers publish advisories at very different speeds. If a specific camera or capture card is load-bearing for you, check its support page before updating.

The workaround, and how well it works

Elgato's published fix is a USB mode toggle in Camera Hub:

  1. 1. Open Camera Hub.
  2. 2. Find the USB Transfer Mode setting (Elgato documents where in its Facecam USB Transfer Mode article).
  3. 3. Set USB Transfer Mode to Bulk.
  4. 4. Set it back to Automatic — or to Isochronous if that suits your setup.

Worth saying plainly, because Elgato publishes the number itself and most coverage will skip it: the helpfulness counter under that support article reads 2 out of 12. Elgato describes it as something "some users have reported" rather than a fix, and that ratio matches. Try it — it costs nothing — but do not treat it as resolved.

Why this keeps happening every autumn

Apple ships a major macOS version every September. Streaming setups are the most driver-dependent, most USB-heavy, least-tested configuration in consumer computing — capture cards, webcams, audio interfaces, virtual cameras, each with its own kernel-adjacent plumbing. Every year something in that chain breaks, and every year the vendor fix arrives weeks later.

The lesson is not about this bug. It is that a machine you earn from should not take a major OS update in its first month. Let someone else find the problems; there is no prize for being early, and no clean path back if you are.

If it dies mid-stream

Switch to a scene that does not need the camera before you start troubleshooting — a BRB card or full-screen gameplay. Fixing hardware live, on camera, while the camera is the broken thing, goes badly. One key that jumps to a safe scene is the single most useful thing on a Stream Deck, and the reason to set it up before you need it.

Then run the Camera Hub toggle. If it does not take, fall back to a phone as a webcam or the Mac's built-in camera for the rest of the session — our phone-as-camera guide covers that setup, and it is worth having working before an emergency rather than during one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Elgato Facecam stop working after updating to macOS 27?

Elgato has confirmed the problem publicly: Facecam products stop providing a signal after updating to macOS 27 Golden Gate, and the company says it is working directly with Apple toward a solution. The named models are the Facecam (10WAA9901) and Facecam Pro (10WAB9901). The camera is not broken — the operating system and the device have stopped talking to each other, which is why the suggested workaround is a USB mode toggle rather than anything physical.

What is the workaround for Facecam on macOS 27?

In Camera Hub, set USB Transfer Mode to Bulk, then set it back to Automatic or to Isochronous. That is Elgato's published workaround. Be aware of how well it is working: at the time of writing, the helpfulness counter on Elgato's own support article reads 2 out of 12 people found it helpful. Try it, but do not plan a stream around it holding.

Should I update to macOS 27 if I stream?

Not yet, if your camera is a Facecam or Facecam Pro and you have a stream scheduled. macOS 27 Golden Gate shipped on September 14, 2026 and this is still open more than a month later, with the vendor still working with Apple. There is no downgrade path that does not involve a wipe and restore, so the cheap decision is to wait. If you have already updated, the workaround above is what exists today.

Does this affect other webcams and capture cards?

Only Elgato Facecam and Facecam Pro are named in Elgato's advisory, and we found no evidence of macOS 27 breaking other vendors' capture hardware. That is not the same as a guarantee — major macOS releases have a long history of disturbing USB video devices, and vendors publish advisories at different speeds. If you depend on a specific camera or capture card, check that manufacturer's support page before you update rather than after.

Can I roll back to macOS 26?

Not cleanly. Downgrading a major macOS version means erasing the Mac and reinstalling, then restoring from a backup made on the older version — which most people do not have. This is the practical reason to delay major OS updates on a machine you earn from: the update is one click and the reversal is an afternoon.

What should I do if I am mid-stream and the camera dies?

Switch to a scene that does not need the camera while you fix it — a BRB or full-screen gameplay scene — rather than troubleshooting on air. This is exactly the argument for having one key that switches to a safe scene; our Stream Deck guide covers setting that up. Then run the Camera Hub USB mode toggle, and if that fails, fall back to a phone as a webcam or built-in FaceTime camera for the rest of the session.
