Kick Blocks Its Slots & Casino Category in Japan — the Ninth Country to Lose It

The block was reported on September 7 by streaming-industry account platcorn, with screenshots of the Japanese-language restriction screen. Instead of the category grid, viewers get:

“Content is not available in your region — this category cannot be viewed due to regional restrictions,” above a button back to the home page.

The mechanism is built into Kick's own front end — the site ships a “Region restricted” tag alongside its age-restriction tag, applied per category. Kick has not published a statement about Japan, and the company rarely announces these changes; they surface when viewers in the affected market notice the padlock.

Where the Category Is Now Restricted

Greece is the cautionary tale in that list. There the regulator did not settle for the category being hidden — it blacklisted kick.com itself over the provision of unlicensed gambling services, taking the whole platform down for Greek users. Every geo-fence Kick has since applied is an attempt to avoid repeating that outcome, and the tweet reporting the Japan block says as much: the platform hides the category “to avoid sanctions and access blocks”.

The nine above are the publicly reported markets. Streamers have separately reported Malta appearing on the restricted list, so the real count is probably higher — Kick does not publish the list.

Why Japan, and Why Now

Online casinos were already illegal in Japan. What changed is who else is on the hook. Japan's revised gambling law took effect on September 26, 2025, and it criminalises disseminating information that encourages people to gamble online — not just running a casino. The prohibited conduct spelled out under it covers listing casino apps in app stores, publishing or sharing links to gambling sites on social media, advertising them, and even providing Japanese-language access to foreign gambling platforms.

A live category full of people playing offshore casinos, in a Japanese-language interface, sits uncomfortably close to that description. Enforcement has already started — police in Gifu Prefecture arrested two people over a site funnelling users to a Curaçao-licensed casino — and a government decision on mandatory ISP-level blocking of offshore gambling sites is expected in summer 2026. Hiding one category is a considerably cheaper outcome than being on that list.

This Is Not a Minor Category

It would be easy to read “niche category geo-blocked” and move on. Kick's own public API says otherwise. At the time of writing, the top of the platform looked like this:

Slots & Casino carries more concurrent viewers than IRL, EA Sports FC and every other game on the platform except GTA V, and roughly 186,000 accounts follow the category directly. Kick is geo-fencing its third-largest audience surface in nine markets — a real cost the company is choosing to absorb.

The reason it absorbs it rather than retreating is structural. Kick was founded by the people behind the Stake casino brand, and casino content has been a core category since launch rather than a tolerated side-effect. Twitch went the opposite way in 2022, banning streams of unlicensed slots, roulette and dice sites platform-wide. Kick keeps the category and manages the legal exposure country by country — which is exactly what a growing list of geo-blocks looks like.
