Twitch Blocks Under-15 Accounts in Turkey, Existing Ones Go in 2027

By Alex Reed··4 min read

Twitch Support announced today that, in compliance with Turkish law, users under 15 in Turkey can no longer create an account — and that Turkish accounts already belonging to under-15s will be deactivated in February 2027.

The two dates

October 29, 2026New accounts stop

Users in Turkey under 15 can no longer create a Twitch account. In force the day it was announced, three days before the law itself takes effect.

February 2027Existing accounts deactivated

Twitch says Turkish accounts belonging to under-15s will be deactivated — a month or more before the March 31, 2027 deadline the regulation sets for checking accounts that already exist.

The law behind it

Turkey's parliament passed legislation in April 2026 barring under-15s from social media. The implementing regulation, published in October by the country's Cybersecurity Presidency, comes into force on 1 November 2026 — which makes Twitch's announcement three days early rather than late.

Verification is designed to keep identity out of the platform's hands: the check runs through e-Devlet, Turkey's state e-government portal, and returns a token saying whether the person is over 15 or over 18 rather than handing over documents.

The half Twitch did not mention

An age gate is the straightforward part of this regulation. The same rules also tell platforms to drop endless scroll, autoplay and algorithmic feeds for minors, and to stop using their personal data for profiling. Teens between 15 and 17 are supposed to get follower-only messaging, no read receipts, no tailored advertising and technical measures against screenshots of their photos and posts.

Twitch's front page is an autoplaying recommendation feed. So is its browse page, its category pages and its mobile app. A rule that removes autoplay and algorithmic recommendation for a class of users is not a settings toggle — it is a different product for those users. Today's announcement covers the under-15 ban and nothing else, and what happens to the rest of the regulation is the open question.

How much of Twitch this touches

Less than the noise suggests. Measured by language, Turkish ranks 18th on Twitch at roughly 0.18% of watch time, behind Finnish and just ahead of Greek, on Streams Charts' public breakdown checked today. English alone is about 48%.

That is the uncomfortable arithmetic behind compliance speed. A rule that costs a platform a fraction of a percent of watch time gets implemented in days. The same rule in a top-five market would be argued over for months — which is worth remembering as other countries draft their own versions, because the next one may not be this cheap to obey.

For Turkish creators the practical sting is the February date. Deactivation hits accounts that already exist, so a 14-year-old with a channel, a follower list and a clip archive loses the account rather than simply being blocked at signup. If that is you or someone in your community, the time to export clips and VODs is now — our guides on downloading Twitch clips and working with clips cover the mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Twitch adding age verification everywhere?

No. What Twitch announced on 29 October 2026 applies to Turkey and follows Turkish law. Users under 15 in Turkey can no longer create an account, and existing under-15 Turkish accounts are to be deactivated in February 2027. Nothing in the announcement extends that to other countries.

Why is Twitch doing this now?

Turkey passed legislation in April 2026 barring under-15s from social media, and the implementing regulation — published in October by the country's Cybersecurity Presidency — takes effect on 1 November 2026. Twitch moved on 29 October, three days early.

How will Turkish users prove their age?

The regulation routes verification through e-Devlet, Turkey's state e-government portal. The platform is meant to receive a token answering whether the user is over 15 or over 18, rather than the user's identity documents or date of birth.

What happens to a Turkish under-15 account that already exists?

Twitch says those accounts will be deactivated in February 2027. The regulation requires platforms to finish checking existing accounts by 31 March 2027, so Twitch is acting ahead of that deadline rather than waiting for it.

How big is Turkey on Twitch?

Smaller than its reputation suggests, measured by language. Turkish ranks 18th among Twitch languages at about 0.18% of watch time, according to Streams Charts' public language breakdown checked on 29 October 2026. That is part of why a change like this is cheap for Twitch to make in Turkey and would not be anywhere near as cheap in, say, Germany.

Does the law affect streamers over 15?

Yes, and more than the headline suggests. Minors aged 15 to 17 get stricter defaults — follower-only messaging, no read receipts, no tailored ads — and platforms are told to drop endless scroll, autoplay and algorithmic recommendation feeds for minors and to stop profiling them. Twitch has not said how it will handle that part.
