Price: What Is Free and What Ultra Adds

OBS Studio has no paid tier at all. Anything that costs money in an OBS setup is a third-party service you chose to add — an alert provider, a relay, a plugin whose author charges.

Streamlabs Desktop is free and genuinely usable free. According to Streamlabs' plan page, the free tier includes Dual Output to one vertical and one horizontal platform, hundreds of free overlay and widget themes, the standard widgets (Alert Box, Chat Box and more), a tip page with no fee from Streamlabs, Cloudbot, limited free apps, five stream automations, 1 GB of cloud storage and Collab Cam for one guest.

Streamlabs Ultra is $27 a month or $189 a year (about $15.75 a month). It adds multistreaming to several destinations through Streamlabs' servers, the full library of thousands of themes including Reactive Overlays, the full App Store, a custom-named Cloudbot, Collab Cam for up to 11 guests or cameras, Stream Shift (switch devices mid-stream), Streamlabs Console for Xbox, 10 GB of storage and the Pro tiers of Streamlabs' editing tools. An Ultra+ tier adds more automation limits and dedicated support.

Performance: Why Streamlabs Is Heavier, and by How Much

Streamlabs' own GitHub repository describes the app as “built on Electron and OBS.” That sentence explains most of the performance debate:

• Encoding costs the same. Capture and encoding run on OBS's engine in both apps. The same encoder, resolution, frame rate and bitrate produce the same load and the same picture.
• The interface costs more. Electron is a web-browser-based app shell, which uses more memory than OBS's native Qt interface.
• Widgets and themes cost more. Animated themes, alert boxes and chat boxes render as browser sources. That is true in OBS too — but Streamlabs setups tend to start with several of them running.

We do not quote a percentage because nobody publishes a like-for-like benchmark, and the gap depends on your scene more than the app. What Streamlabs does publish: 8 GB of RAM minimum and 16 GB+ recommended. OBS lists no RAM figure and only asks for a DirectX 10.1 GPU on Windows.

To measure it on your own machine, build the same scene in both apps (same sources, same widgets), set the same encoder, and watch CPU, GPU and memory in Task Manager or Activity Monitor for ten minutes of the same game. If either app drops frames, the fix is almost always the encoder, not the app — start with our bitrate and encoder cheat sheet and move to a hardware encoder (NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync or Apple's).

Alerts, Widgets and Themes — Including Streamlabs Widgets in OBS

This is where Streamlabs earns its reputation. Log in and you get an Alert Box, Chat Box, goals, event lists, Cloudbot and a theme gallery inside the app, already connected to your channel. You do not have to choose, though. Streamlabs widgets work in OBS:

1. Browser source (any OS). Copy the widget URL from your Streamlabs dashboard, then in OBS add Sources → + → Browser and paste it. Keep the URL private — it is tied to your account.
2. Streamlabs Plugin for OBS (Windows 10/11 only, free). It adds themes, widgets, Stream Labels and Cloudbot to OBS with one-click install and, per Streamlabs, does not modify your existing scenes or settings. Server-side multistreaming and premium overlays through the plugin still need Ultra.

Plugins vs the Streamlabs App Store

OBS's strength is its plugin library on the OBS forums: extra outputs, vertical canvases, transitions, audio tools, scripting. Those plugins are written and tested for OBS Studio. Streamlabs extends its app differently, through its own App Store — limited free apps, the whole catalogue with Ultra.

The practical rule: if your stream depends on a specific OBS plugin, confirm Streamlabs has an equivalent before switching. If you have never installed a plugin and do not plan to, this row does not matter to you.

Multistreaming, Dual Output and Vertical Video

Streamlabs splits this into two features. Dual Output is free: one vertical and one horizontal destination at the same time, such as TikTok and Twitch. Multistream — several platforms or custom RTMP destinations through Streamlabs' servers, so you upload once — is Ultra.

OBS sends one stream per output out of the box. For vertical video you add the free Aitum Vertical plugin (Windows, macOS and Linux; version 1.6.4 from May 2026); for several platforms you add a multi-RTMP plugin or send one stream to a relay. Our multistreaming guide walks through both routes.

For Twitch Dual Format — Twitch's own portrait feed for mobile viewers — Twitch's help center lists Streamlabs among the apps that work without a plugin and OBS as working with Aitum Vertical. Either way Enhanced Broadcasting has to be on. Setup and eligibility are in our Twitch dual-format guide.

TikTok and Kick

TikTok is Streamlabs' clearest advantage. You log in with TikTok and apply for access inside the app, with no stream key. The catch is on Streamlabs' TikTok page: since July 7, 2025, streamers using Streamlabs for TikTok LIVE whose streams are less than 50% gaming may lose that access, and can reapply after 14 days. OBS works with TikTok only if TikTok gives your account a stream key. If you have neither, TikTok LIVE Studio is the desktop route — all three are compared in how to go live on TikTok.

Account, Privacy and Who Controls Updates

• Account. OBS needs none, and it records without an internet connection. Streamlabs Desktop asks you to log in with a Streamlabs ID or a streaming platform during onboarding, and its features are tied to that account.
• Who is behind it. OBS Studio is an independent open-source project. Streamlabs is a Logitech company; its privacy policy (last updated August 20, 2025) covers the app and its web services. Read it if you stream client or sponsored content.
• Updates. OBS updates when you click Install. Streamlabs' patch-notes FAQ says automatic updates “cannot be disabled or delayed at this time” and roll out in phases — so a change can land on the morning of a big stream.

Mac Support and Update Cadence

Both apps have Intel and Apple Silicon builds. OBS 32.2 dropped macOS 12 because of a Qt update; Monterey users are told to stay on 32.1.2. Streamlabs lists macOS 12 or newer, but says its macOS and Windows versions can differ, and its OBS plugin is Windows only.

On cadence, OBS moves faster at the engine level. Its release page shows 32.2.0 on July 21, 2026, 32.2.1 three days later, 32.2.2 on August 14, and the 33.0 beta in testing through late September. Streamlabs' patch notes show its June 2026 update moving the app to OBS 31.1.2 — a full major version behind — while it ships its own features (Dual Output fixes, AI tools, new platforms) on top. New OBS engine features reach Streamlabs later, if at all.

Switching Between Them Without Rebuilding Your Scenes

OBS → Streamlabs Desktop

During onboarding Streamlabs offers to import your OBS Studio scenes and profiles in one click. Choose Start Fresh if you want a clean install instead.

Streamlabs Desktop → OBS

1. In OBS, open Settings → General and under Importers tick Search known locations for scene collections when importing.
2. Go to Scene Collection → Import. OBS lists the Streamlabs Desktop collections it found.
3. Select the one you want, import it, then pick it from the Scene Collection menu.
4. Re-enter what does not transfer: output and encoder settings, hotkeys and audio devices. Then check every alert and widget source fires before going live.
