TwitchCon Is Getting an Actual Concert, and a Reaction Streamer Booked It

Twitch has announced Friday Function, a live concert at TwitchCon San Diego on November 13 hosted by ImDontai, with six musical guests he picked himself. Two hours, in the Twitch Rivals Arena, and — in Twitch's words — you can be there "in person, or in chat, or both". The six guests have not been named.

A curator, not a performer
The detail worth sitting with is who is hosting. ImDontai is a reaction creator — his audience was built on him listening to music on camera and telling you what he thinks of it. He is not the act. He is the taste.

TwitchCon has quietly built a music track
Friday Function is not a one-off novelty bolted onto a gaming convention. Look at the weekend as a whole and there is a performance programme running through it: the Drag Showcase on Friday afternoon, the QSMP Awards on Saturday, Ironmouse Presents: Open Stage on Saturday evening, and Kappa Cabana — a DJ and music-streamer space presented by Yamaha — running all three days.
That is a convention building out the thing Twitch's music category has never quite had: a physical room, a stage and a schedule. For creators in that category it is worth watching what the attendance looks like, because a well-attended Friday Function is the argument for a bigger one next year.
