TikTok LIVE Gifts, Coins and Diamonds: How a Gift Actually Becomes Money
·11 min read
TikTok runs two currencies on purpose. Viewers buy coins and spend them on gifts; creators receive diamonds and cash those out. The exchange between them is where the money goes — and the widely repeated “TikTok takes 50%” undersells it. This is the full chain with real numbers, the gift table, and the withdrawal rules written into TikTok's own Virtual Items Policy that most creators never read.
The Chain: Dollars → Coins → Gift → Diamonds → Dollars
Coins — what viewers buy
About 1.05¢ per coin in the larger bundles on tiktok.com, and around 1.4¢ inside the iOS or Android app once Apple or Google take their store fee. Same coin, different price.
Diamonds — what creators earn
A gift converts to diamonds in the creator's balance at a rate TikTok sets and can change; the rate creators consistently observe is about 2 coins → 1 diamond.
Withdrawal — diamonds to USD
Roughly $0.005 per diamond, paid in US dollars to a verified PayPal account (or another channel where offered), subject to a regional minimum and a daily cap shown at withdrawal.
Put together on a 1,000-coin Galaxy: the viewer pays about $10.50 on the web, the creator is credited about 500 diamonds, and those cash out to about $2.50. Every link in that chain is set by TikTok and displayed only at the moment of purchase or withdrawal — the policy explicitly reserves the right to change the coin-to-gift and gift-to-diamond rates “in our sole discretion”.

Why “TikTok Takes 50%” Is the Optimistic Version
The 50% figure is real, but it compares diamonds to a coin's face value of one cent. Viewers do not pay face value. Once you measure the creator's payout against the money that actually left the viewer's card, the share drops sharply:
| 1,000-coin gift | Viewer pays | Creator gets | Real share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coins at 1¢ face value | $10.00 | $2.50 | 25% |
| Coins bought on the web | ~$10.50 | $2.50 | ~24% |
| Coins bought in the app | ~$14.10 | $2.50 | ~18% |
Two practical consequences. First, if your community wants to support you efficiently, tell them to buy coins on tiktok.com, not in the app — the same dollar buys around a third more coins. Second, treat LIVE gifts as one income stream among several, not the business model; compare the split with what Twitch, Kick and YouTube pay before deciding where your effort goes.
What Every Major Gift Is Worth
| Gift | Coins | Viewer pays (web) | Diamonds | Creator gets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rose | 1 | $0.01 | 1 | $0.00 |
| Finger Heart | 5 | $0.05 | 3 | $0.01 |
| Perfume | 20 | $0.21 | 10 | $0.05 |
| Doughnut | 30 | $0.32 | 15 | $0.08 |
| Paper Crane | 99 | $1.04 | 50 | $0.25 |
| Hand Hearts | 100 | $1.05 | 50 | $0.25 |
| Corgi | 299 | $3.14 | 150 | $0.75 |
| Money Gun | 500 | $5.25 | 250 | $1.25 |
| Swan | 699 | $7.34 | 350 | $1.75 |
| Galaxy | 1,000 | $10.50 | 500 | $2.50 |
| Drama Queen | 5,000 | $52.50 | 2,500 | $12.50 |
| Sports Car | 7,000 | $73.50 | 3,500 | $17.50 |
| Interstellar | 10,000 | $105.00 | 5,000 | $25.00 |
| Planet | 15,000 | $157.50 | 7,500 | $37.50 |
| Lion | 29,999 | $314.99 | 15,000 | $75.00 |
| TikTok Universe | 44,999 | $472.49 | 22,500 | $112.50 |
Catalogue values as widely reported in 2026. TikTok rotates seasonal gifts and occasionally reprices — the in-app exchange screen is the authority, and the policy says so in as many words.
Who Can Earn, and How Withdrawal Actually Works
- 18+ for everything involving money. Buying coins, sending gifts, earning diamonds and withdrawing are all restricted to users aged 18 or the age of majority in their jurisdiction. LIVE access itself generally arrives around 1,000 followers — see how to go live on TikTok.
- Payout is in USD to PayPal. Your first and last name must exactly match the PayPal account, and the PayPal account must be verified. TikTok will not pay to an account whose email or name differs from your TikTok identity.
- Expect an ID check. TikTok reserves the right to request a photocopy of a state ID to verify identity, age and eligibility before releasing any payment.
- Minimums and daily caps are regional and shown at the moment you withdraw. Creators commonly report thresholds between $50 and $100.
- No promised timeline. The policy states TikTok does not guarantee fulfilment within any specific period, including estimates shown at withdrawal.
- Taxes are yours. TikTok may withhold where legally required and may report payments to tax authorities. Treat gift income as self-employment income wherever you live.
The refund clawback
If a viewer obtains a refund on the coins behind a gift, your payout for that gift is forfeited, and you must repay it within 5 business days of TikTok's notice. That is why experienced LIVE creators treat a sudden Lion from a day-old account as a liability until the refund window has passed — not as a reason to celebrate on stream.
Three more lines from the policy worth knowing: gifting is public — the recipient and other viewers can see the sender's name, ID and the gift; coins, gifts and diamonds are not property and cannot be transferred, sold or inherited; and all three vanish on account termination, with no refund of unused balance.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a TikTok gift worth in real money?
Work it in two steps. The viewer pays roughly 1¢ per coin on the web (about 1.4¢ inside the app). The creator receives about one diamond per two coins, and each diamond cashes out at about $0.005. So a 1,000-coin Galaxy costs the viewer around $10.50 and pays the creator around $2.50.
Does TikTok really take 50% of gifts?
Fifty percent is the nominal figure: a coin is worth 1¢ on paper and the diamonds you get back are worth about half that. Against what the viewer actually paid, the creator's share is closer to 24% for web-bought coins and under 20% for in-app coins, because store fees and coin markup come off first.
Who can receive LIVE gifts on TikTok?
You must be 18 or older (or the age of majority where you live), have LIVE access, and be in a region where LIVE Gifts are available. TikTok's Virtual Items Policy restricts buying coins, sending gifts, earning diamonds and withdrawing to adults only.
How do I withdraw TikTok diamonds?
From your Balance screen, choose to withdraw diamonds for a USD payment to a verified PayPal account (or another payment channel where offered). Your first and last name on TikTok must exactly match the PayPal account, and TikTok may ask for a state ID to verify identity and age before paying.
What is the minimum withdrawal for TikTok diamonds?
It depends on your region and is shown at the point of withdrawal, alongside a daily withdrawal limit. Creators commonly report minimums in the $50–$100 range. TikTok does not guarantee a payout timeline.
Can TikTok take back money I already withdrew?
Yes. If a viewer receives a refund for the coins behind a gift, the corresponding payout to you is forfeited and the policy requires you to repay it within 5 business days of TikTok's notice. Large gifts from brand-new accounts are the classic refund risk.
Which is the most expensive TikTok gift?
TikTok Universe at 44,999 coins — roughly $470 of coins on the web — paying the creator about 22,500 diamonds, or around $112. The Lion at 29,999 coins is the next tier.
Are diamonds the same as coins?
No. Coins are what viewers buy and spend; diamonds are what creators earn and withdraw. You cannot buy diamonds, convert diamonds back into coins, or transfer either to another user. Both disappear if the account is terminated.
