PogChamp Meaning: From Gootecks to a Komodo Dragon

PogChamp — shortened to Pog — is Twitch shorthand for hype and disbelief: something so good, lucky or unexpected that chat has to shout. The original emote was the face of fighting-game personality Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez; since February 2021 the global PogChamp has been an open-mouthed Komodo dragon. Poggers and PogU are third-party spin-offs that mean the same thing.
The Original Face and Where “Pog” Comes From
The first PogChamp was a still of Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez pulling a startled face in an outtake from his Cross Counter TV channel, uploaded to YouTube on November 26, 2010. Twitch added it to its global emotes in 2012, and for most of the next decade it was the standard reaction to a big play.
“Pog” does not stand for anything in chat. The emote is named after “Pogs Championship”, a promotional video Gutierrez made, and Pogs were the 1990s milk-cap game — itself named after POG juice (passion fruit, orange, guava) from Haleakala Dairy on Maui. That is why a search for “pog” also turns up juice, cardboard discs and a military acronym that has nothing to do with Twitch.
January 2021: Removal, a Daily Rotation, Then the Lizard
On the evening of January 6, 2021, Twitch pulled the emote “following statements from the face of the emote encouraging further violence” after the attack on the US Capitol that day. From January 8 it kept the name PogChamp but swapped in a different creator’s face every 24 hours.
The rotation ended with a live community vote Twitch called the PogChampening on February 12, 2021. KomodoHype — a lizard emote already in the global set — won with about 81% of the vote, and the open-mouthed Komodo dragon has been PogChamp ever since; it is still the image Twitch serves for the emote in September 2026. KomodoHype also remains a separate global emote, so Twitch now has two of them.
The Gootecks face never came back to native Twitch. A different still of him lives on as PogU on FrankerFaceZ, and the Pepe version, POGGERS, had already been on BetterTTV since 2017.
Pog in Chat Today
The swap did not kill the word. In Streams Charts data for one week of Twitch chat, the native PogChamp still appeared in more channels than POGGERS and PogU combined — the Komodo dragon inherited the habit along with the name.
Twitch leans on it too. PogChamp is the default emote in Hype Train animations (streamers can swap in one of their own), and a golden PogChamp is one of three possible rewards from the ultra-rare Mythic Train — contributors keep it for 24 hours, according to Twitch’s Hype Train guide.
Use it for real hype: a clutch round, a one-in-a-hundred drop on the first try, a surprise announcement. Spammed after something mundane (“he drank water PogChamp”), it turns into a joke about hype, which chat also does constantly. Pog moments are exactly what viewers clip, so if you stream, it pays to know how to clip and edit them.
Pog on Kick and Outside Streaming
Kick’s global emote set has no PogChamp; it carries PogU instead. On September 14, 2026, Streams Charts counted PogU in 113,162 Kick chat messages across 2,353 channels. The rest of Kick’s built-in set is covered in our Kick emotes guide.
“Pog” has also escaped chat entirely. It is ordinary gamer slang for “awesome” on Discord, YouTube and out loud — “that’s so pog” — and people who have never opened Twitch use it without knowing where it came from.
