Where monkaS came from
The drawing is older than the emote. Pepe the Frog comes from Matt Furie's 2005 comic Boy's Club, and Know Your Meme traces this particular sweating, nervous Pepe to a 4chan /lit/ thread from July 16, 2011.
Twitch user Monkasen uploaded it to BetterTTV on March 16, 2016, and the emote took its name from the uploader — the "monka" in every later variant is a username, not a word. The most-used FrankerFaceZ copy followed in September 2016 and now sits in about 125,000 FFZ emote sets.

Ranked by how often it is typed, monkaS is a mid-table emote. Across the same Streams Charts sample it appeared in 4,842 channels, while Twitch's own WutFace — the native horror reaction every viewer can see without an extension — was typed about 2.6 times as often.
Channel counts on the emote services flip the picture. As of September 2026, the most popular 7TV upload of monkaW has been added by about 131,000 channels, against about 59,000 for monkaS; on FrankerFaceZ, monkaW sits in about 145,000 emote sets to monkaS's 125,000. The likely reason is that BetterTTV already ships monkaS globally, so streamers only have to add the variants.
