COPIUM is an imaginary drug for coping: “huffing copium” means clinging to an excuse or a hopeful story because the real outcome is too painful to accept. The Twitch emote shows Pepe the Frog breathing from an oxygen tube labelled COPIUM. HOPIUM is its twin — hope rather than denial, usually before the result is in.
From 4chan Slang to a Chat Staple
Copium is “cope” plus “opium”. Know Your Meme traces the word on 4chan to March 2018 and the image of Pepe inhaling copium from a tank to July 2019; by October 2020 Urban Dictionary had an entry calling it the metaphorical drug you inhale when faced with a loss. By then it was turning up in political memes as well as gaming ones.
On Twitch it lives on the third-party layer. One of the most-added FrankerFaceZ versions was uploaded in January 2021, and 7TV lists hundreds of separate uploads named COPIUM, so each channel can pick its own art — the oxygen-tube Pepe is the classic. It is not a native Twitch emote (how the third-party layer works) and not part of Kick’s built-in set either.
Copium After the Result, Hopium Before It
COPIUM is almost always about an outcome that already happened: a team that lost, a patch that gutted a favourite pick, a game delayed again. It can be self-aware (“full copium, they win the next map”) or aimed at someone else’s fan base. Before the result, when fans are talking themselves into a win, the word is HOPIUM.
Chat reaches for denial far more than for hope. In the Streams Charts sample of Twitch chat (September 14–20, 2026), COPIUM was typed roughly 25 times as often as HOPIUM — and when chat does hope, it prefers Prayge, the praying Pepe, which turned up in 3,614 channels that week.
Banter or a Brush-Off
Pointed at the streamer’s own take, COPIUM is friendly teasing. Pointed at a viewer who is upset about a loss, or at a whole region’s fans during a tournament, it is the chat form of “cope” — a dismissal that ends the conversation. It arrives in waves in esports watch parties and co-streams right after an upset; that is usually harmless until two fan bases start trading it back and forth, which is the point where slow mode earns its keep.
