Sadge is a flattened, downcast Pepe the Frog emote that means disappointment — the small, real kind. Chat types it when a run ends one hit short, a giveaway goes to someone else or the stream is ending for the night. It is milder than crying PepeHands and newer than FeelsBadMan, and today chat types it far more often than either.
Where Sadge came from
Sadge is a late addition to a very old meme. The sad frog captioned "feels bad man" first shows up in a 4chan /v/ thread on January 22, 2009, according to Know Your Meme — an edited panel of Pepe from Matt Furie's comic Boy's Club with the mouth flipped upside down.
Sadge itself was uploaded to BetterTTV by the user Redshell on January 3, 2020, and a FrankerFaceZ copy followed within two weeks. The drawing is Pepe squashed flat, looking down, with a slack disappointed mouth — it is visibly wider than it is tall, which is part of why it reads as deflated rather than dramatic.
It spread through the big 2020 chats — Know Your Meme records early adoption in the Forsen, AdmiralBulldog and xQc communities — and has kept climbing since. As of September 2026 the most popular 7TV upload of Sadge has been added by about 200,000 channels.
Sadge vs PepeHands vs FeelsBadMan
All three are sad Pepes, and chat treats them as a scale. Sadge is a shrug with a frown: annoying, a shame, moving on. PepeHands — a Pepe crying with its hands raised, on FrankerFaceZ since September 2016 — is actual emotion: a farewell stream, a heartbreaking story, a tournament run ending in the final. FeelsBadMan is the original 2009 sad frog, kept alive mostly because BetterTTV includes it in its global set.
Being global has not saved FeelsBadMan. In the Streams Charts week shown above, Sadge was typed about 6 times as often as FeelsBadMan and appeared in 7,066 channels to FeelsBadMan's 3,203. PepeHands, the heavier emotion, turned up in 1,557 channels — big sadness is rarer than small sadness.
The most common "oh no" on Twitch is still a native one. Twitch's own NotLikeThis appeared in 13,960 channels the same week, roughly twice as many as Sadge — the advantage of an emote every viewer can see without an extension.
The tone: sincere, small, often self-aimed
Sadge is rarely aimed at someone else. It is chat describing its own mood — "no gifted sub for me Sadge", "work tomorrow Sadge" — which is why it works equally well sincere and self-deprecating. Aimed at a streamer who just lost, it is sympathy, not a jab; the mocking equivalents are emotes like PepeLaugh or COPIUM.

When not to use it
Sadge is sized for small things, and that makes it the wrong emote for real loss. When a streamer talks about a death, an illness or a serious personal problem, a column of Sadge can read as flippant. Chats with good instincts switch to plain words, PepeHands, or o7 — a salute typed with letters that every viewer sees.
